I posted replies to documenta suggestions none of which worked yesterday. No one has replied. The problem has reoccured and caused me to lose 6 six!
I think it's time to switch word processors. I can't afford this time. The problem today happened in one long old doc and one short new doc that I just started yesterday and only has 50 words total in the whole doc.
The short new one definitely hadn't had RTF copied and pasted into it a source of the problem someone else suggested. Another long eave doc продолжение здесь fine when the other two didn't. Starting Word docunents Safe mode would be a good test if this problem occurred with any regularity.
But it doesn't. I've got the same 3 docs open now, I'm compulsively saving all, every few minutes, and no problem at all. And I didn't sage Word in Safe mode. And until yesterday, I haven't had this problem in months.
Saving every few minutes seems to be the best thing. Until I switch to Open Office or some other alternative. The problem occurred today with the short new file that was one of the files for which I lost data last Sun. This indicates that Safe Mode is good for starting Word when it won't otherwise start not my problem or disabling add-ins.

If the problem is intermittent, it does make it somewhat harder to track it down, and in that case, starting in safe mode is not likely to help.
